The following is a list of mathematical symbols used in all branches of mathematics to express a formula or to represent a constant. A mathematical concept is independent of the symbol chosen to represent it. For many of the symbols below, the symbol is usually synonymous with its corresponding concept, but in some situations, a different convention may be used.
Ultimately, the choice of symbol is an arbitrary action made as a result of the cumulative history of mathematics. In short, convention dictates the meaning. Each symbol is shown both in HTMLwhose display depends on the browser's access to an appropriate font installed on the particular device, and typeset as an image via TeX.
This list is organized by symbol type and is intended to facilitate the finding of an unfamiliar symbol by its visual appearance.

But did you know you can also use your keyboard to control your computer? Learning a few simple keyboard commands instructions to your computer can help you work more efficiently. The keys on your keyboard can be divided into several groups based on function:.
Keyboard shortcuts are ways to perform actions by using your keyboard. They're called shortcuts because they help you work faster. In fact, almost any action or command you can perform with a mouse can be performed faster using one or more keys on your keyboard. You can do things in most programs by using the keyboard. To see which commands have keyboard shortcuts, open a menu.
The shortcuts if available are shown next to the menu items. These characters are duplicated elsewhere on the keyboard, of course, but the keypad arrangement allows you to rapidly enter numerical data or mathematical operations with one hand.
Operate Calculator with the numeric keypad. So far, we've discussed almost every key you're likely to use. A long time ago, this key actually did what it says—it sent the current screen of text to your printer. Nowadays, pressing PrtScn captures an image of your entire screen a "screen shot" and copies it to the Clipboard in your computer's memory. In most programs, pressing Scroll Lock has no effect. In a few programs, pressing Scroll Lock changes the behavior of the arrow keys and the Page Up and Page Down keys; pressing these keys causes the document to scroll without changing the position of the cursor or selection.
Your keyboard might have a light indicating whether Scroll Lock is on. This key is rarely used. In some older programs, pressing this key pauses the program or, in combination with Ctrl, stops it from running. Some modern keyboards come with "hot keys" or buttons that give you quick, one-press access to programs, files, or commands. Other models have volume controls, scroll wheels, zoom wheels, and other gadgets. For details about these features, check the information that came with your keyboard or computer, or go to the manufacturer's website.
Using your keyboard properly can help avoid soreness or injury to your wrists, hands, and arms, particularly if you use your computer for long periods. Last Updated: Jan 15, Need more help? I have the same question Musical symbols are marks and symbols used since about the 13th century in musical notation of musical scores.
Some are used to notate pitchtempometredurationand articulation of a note or a passage of music. In some cases, symbols provide information about the form of a piece e. Some symbols are instrument-specific notation giving the performer information about which finger, hand or foot to use. The staff is the fundamental latticework of music notation, on which symbols are placed.
The five staff lines and four intervening spaces correspond to pitches of the diatonic scale ; which pitch is meant by a given line or space is defined by the clef. In British usage, the word "stave" is often used. Clefs define the pitch range, or tessituraof the staff on which it is placed. A clef is usually the leftmost symbol on a staff.
Additional clefs may appear in the middle of a staff to indicate a change in register for instruments with a wide range. In early music, clefs could be placed on any of several lines on a staff. Musical note and rest values are not absolutely defined, but are proportional in duration to all other note and rest values. The whole note is the reference value, and the other notes are named in American usage in comparison; i. Accidentals modify the pitch of the notes that follow them on the same staff position within a measure, unless cancelled by an additional accidental.
Key signatures define the prevailing key of the music that follows, thus avoiding the use of accidentals for many notes. The key signature examples shown here are described as they would appear on a treble staff. There is no universally accepted notation for microtonal musicwith varying systems being used depending on the situation. Below are other forms of notation:. A symbol with one vertical and three diagonal bars indicates a sharp with some form of alternate tuning.

Time signatures define the meter of the music. Music is "marked off" in uniform sections called bars or measures, and time signatures establish the number of beats in each. This does not necessarily indicate which beats to emphasize, however, so a time signature that conveys information about the way the piece actually sounds is thus chosen. Time signatures tend to suggest prevailing groupings of beats or pulses. Other commonly used dynamics build upon these values. For example, " pianississimo " represented as ppp means "so softly as to be almost inaudible", and " fortississimo " fff means "extremely loud".
Dynamics are relative, and the meaning of each level is at the discretion of the performer or, in the case of ensembles, the conductor. However, modern legislation to curb high noise levels in the workplace in an effort to prevent damage to musicians' hearing has posed a challenge to the interpretation of very loud dynamics in some large orchestral works, as noise levels within the orchestra itself can easily exceed safe levels when all instruments are playing at full volume.
A small s in front of the dynamic notations means subito meaning "suddenly" in Italianand means that the dynamic is to change to the new notation rapidly. Subito is commonly used with sforzandos, but can appear with all other dynamic notations, most commonly as sff subitofortissimo or spp subitopianissimo. Another value that rarely appears is niente or nwhich means "nothing". This may be used at the end of a diminuendo to indicate "fade out to nothing".
Articulations or accents specify how to perform individual notes within a phrase or passage. They can be fine-tuned by combining more than one such symbol over or under a note. They may also appear in conjunction with phrasing marks listed above. When they appear below the staff, the word bassa is sometimes added. The guitar has a fingerpicking notation system derived from the names of the fingers in Spanish or Latin. In its simplest form, an arrow is a trianglechevronor concave kiteusually affixed to a line segment or rectangleand in more complex forms a representation of an actual arrow e.
The direction indicated by an arrow is the one along the length of the line or rectangle towards the single pointed end. Pedro Reinel in c. The arrow is here used to illustrate the direction of the flow of water and of the water wheel's rotation. At about the same time, arrow symbols were used to indicate the flow of rivers in maps.
A trend towards abstraction, in which the arrow's fletching is removed, can be observed in the mid-to-late 19th century. The arrow can be seen in the work of Paul Klee. In a further abstraction of the symbol, John Richard Green's A Short History of the English People of contained maps by cartographer Emil Reich, which indicated army movements by curved lines, with solid triangular arrowheads placed intermittently along the lines.
Use of arrow symbols in mathematical notation is still younger and develops in the first half of the 20th century. David Hilbert in introduced the arrow symbol representing logical implication. Arrows are universally recognised for indicating directions. Upwards pointing arrows are often used to indicate an increase in a numerical value, and downwards pointing arrows indicate a decrease.
