I've just started getting this same message "Error in scanner". I've got it working by just disconnecting the USB lead and plugging it back in whilst the computer is still on. The scanner then makes it nice whirring noise and works.

I bought a new laptop with 64bit windows I have a Canon mfdn printer. My scanner still isn't working.
I called Canon tech support. I went through their support protocol. We reinstalled the driver. After that was determined not to be the cause of the problem, we tried to stop and restart Windows Image Acquisition WIA. However, it got hung up and froze. When I rebooted my computer, I tried restarting the WIA and it worked fine for a few minutes and was able to scan one document.
However, when I tried again a few minutes later, I got the same issue. I tried again to restart the WIA, but it again froze. What do I do? I can understand that it must be difficult for you when things are not working as it should. Sorry to know that you are facing this issue.
